Personal Background

When Dr. Larry Baker lost his sight at the age of 25, he was married and had three children under the age of seven. At that time, he was working as a Laboratory Technician (an earned job title) in a pharmacology-toxicology lab in veterinary research, having only a high school diploma.

After a year of unsuccessful medical and surgical treatment, he enrolled in the Indiana University School of Business. He was the only blind student among the more than 4,000 students in the Business School.

The Time Management habits and skills he had to learn to live a balanced family, social, community and student life were numerous. A balanced life for him involved making time to participate in his wife’s and children’s activities, maintaining a 100 year old eight bedroom home, serving as a base-station radio operator as a volunteer fireman, being active in the Junior Chamber of Commerce’s numerous civic activities and in his church’s activities.

Meanwhile, he focused on his academic objectives: planning, scheduling and performing his daily school work. That included attending classes and completing all assignments early, never late; weekly scheduling appointments with several volunteer readers, and always arriving on time; arranging to have as many text books as possible recorded months in advance of when they were needed.

His setting his priorities and following them led to his graduating in the top 1% of his class, ranking 5th in a class of 783 Business majors. Two years later, he earned an MBA and 2 years after that a Doctors Degree in Business Administration. None of this was expected of him by his high school teachers, classmates and many others; he had graduated in the bottom 50% of his high school class.

After graduating with his Doctorate Degree, he began to write and speak about the Time Management principles and practices that led to his daily Time Management habits and skills. They were the habits and skills that helped him live a balanced life and sustained him through eight years of formal education and his first professional position as an Assistant Professor of Business Administration at the University of Missouri – St. Louis.

His ability to help others recognize how they could use those same Time Management habits and skills in their own daily lives led to his becoming recognized, internationally, as a Time Management expert -– author, speaker, publisher, consultant and coach.
